Characteristics

Flowers in spike-like, densely pilose bracteate thyrses terminal on the stem and branches, shortly or long-pedunculate or subtended by 1–2 reduced leaves; each bract subtending a bibracteolate partial inflorescence of mostly 4 fertile flowers accompanied by 4 bracteolate sterile flowers consisting of slender finally spinous processes; partial inflorescences falling as a unit complete with bracteoles; bracts persistent on the inflorescence axis.

Utricle scarcely compressed, irregularly ruptured below by the developing seed, the rounded apex considerably pilose, gibbous to one side of the style with a short horn-like process.
Ovary scarcely compressed, uniovulate, considerably pilose above and corniculate to one side at the apex; style slender, stigma simple, capitate.
Stamens 5; filaments delicate, fused below with very short and blunt pseudostaminodes between; anthers bilocular.
