Characteristics

Perennial tree or shrub, 1.5-8.0 m high; dioecious; much branched; branches twiggy, tomentose or pubescent when young, then glabrous and covered with many conspicuous lenticels. Leaves oblanceolate, base gradually narrowed, apex somewhat rounded and mucronate, margins cartilaginous; conspicuously reticulate on both surfaces; petioles slightly pubescent. Stipules lanceolate, membranous, sparingly pubescent or glabrous. Flowers in axillary fascicles; shortly pedicellate; pedicels woolly-tomentose. Male flowers: sepals 5, ovate-elliptic, obtuse, woolly-pubescent; petals obovate, base narrowed, glabrous; disc glands 5, large, woolly-pubescent; stamens 5; filaments glabrous; rudimentary ovary tripartite, segments bilobed, villous. Female flowers: sepals as in male; petals narrower than in male; disc thick, annular, villous; ovary 3-locular, ovoid-globose, tomentose; style spreading. Fruit a trilobed capsule. Seeds wrinkled.
