More
Leaves up to c. 15 x 3 cm., ± narrowly lanceolate in outline, ± runcinate, 3–7-lobed, narrowly-winged petiole-like and dentate-auriculate at the base, subentire to denticulate often ciliate on the margins, setose particularly on the midrib and reticulation beneath; terminal lobe up to 6 cm. long, narrowly triangular-sagittate, attenuate above; lateral lobes up to 2 x 1 cm., recurved acute-mucronate.
Involucres c. 10 x 2 mm. and cylindric at time of flowering, increasing to c. 15 x 2.5 mm. and becoming narrowly conical in fruiting capitula; phyllaries narrowly lanceolate, the outer less than half the length of the innermost, obtuse and ciliolate above, glabrous or sometimes with 1–5 conspicuous setae along the midrib, green often purple-tinged where exposed.
Achenes pale-brown, up to c. 6 x 1.5 mm. including a 1 mm. long beak, narrowly ellipsoid, somewhat compressed with swollen ribs on the margins and 4–5 corky wing-like ribs on each face, hispidulous or glabrous; pappus several-seriate, of equal white barbellate setae up to c. 7.5 mm. long.
Florets c. 5 per capitulum; corollas 13–14 mm. long, tube slender pubescent about the mouth, ligule yellow often with a purple central band outside, 7–8 x 3–3.5 mm., lorate, spreading.
Synflorescences paniculate, axillary or terminal, usually borne clear of the foliage; branches glabrous and with leaf-like bracts.
Capitula numerous; stalks up to c. 3 cm. long with 1-several c. 2 mm. long lanceolate bracteoles.
A vigorous scandent short-lived perennial herb up to c. 2 m. high.
Stems terete, ± densely leafy, setose, or glabrescent above.
