Characteristics

Small trees to 15 m. tall, glabrous throughout. Leaves elliptic to obovate, obtusely subcaudate-acuminate at the apex, obtuse to rounded at the base, 5-9 cm. long, 1.0-3.5 cm. wide, the gland at distal end of the costa opening on the lower surface by means of a small pore, the submarginal vein well developed; petiole 5-6 mm. long. Peduncle 19-27 mm. long; pedicel 2.5-5.0 mm. long; bracteoles 2, 5-7 mm. long, 8-12 mm. wide, coriaceous, caducous. Hypanthium campanulate, 2.5-4.0 cm. long, 2.5-3.5 cm. broad at the orifice, coriaceous except the more or less deltoid calyx lobes. Petals inserted about 5 mm. below the orifice of the hypan-thium, 2.7-3.0 cm. long, 0.8-1.5 cm. wide, sometimes erose. Stamens equal, greatly exserted, the anthers 7-8 mm. long, the filaments 7-9 cm. long, inserted at one level about one-third above the base of the hypanthium, contorted in bud, red. Ovary turbinate, 5-10 mm. long, about 5 mm. in diameter, somewhat abruptly narrowed into a cuneate gynophore 5-11 mm. long, glabrous; style to 10 cm. long, exserted. Fruit a hard thick-walled capsule to 6.5 cm. long, 4 cm. in diameter. Seeds oblong-lanceolate, to 40 mm. long, 5-15 mm. wide; cotyledons ovate.
