Characteristics

Subshrubs, creeping-decumbent or scrambling. Stem weak, subcylindrical; branches rooting at nodes that touch the soil. Leaves petiolate; petiole 1–4 mm long, pubescent; lamina ovate or subrhomboid-oblong to narrowly ovate, 8–35 mm long, 5–20 mm wide, crenately serrate, rugosely scabrous adaxially, resinous-glandular and tomentose abaxially. Inflorescence capitate, hemispheric to oblong, 10–35 mm diam. Flowers c. 20 in each capitulum; bracts unequal with outer ones longer, broadly ovate, often 5 mm wide, conspicuously involucrate. Calyx tube 1–2 mm long, subvillous-pubescent and resinous-punctate outside. Corolla pink-lilac or purple, pubescent and resinous-punctate outside; tube almost straight, dilated about the middle, 5–12 mm long; limbs 2–8 mm wide. Stamens inserted about the middle of the corolla tube; anthers ellipsoidal. Ovary ellipsoid-globose, glabrous; style 1–2.5 mm long; stigma oblique. Drupe ellipsoid to globose, half enclosed by calyx, splitting into 2 pyrenes.

Aromatic, semi-prostrate shrub; stems to c. 20 cm high, ± trailing, densely hairy, scabrid but otherwise not armed. Petioles to c. 1 cm long. Lamina 1.5-3 × 1.-1.5 cm (on flowering branches), narrow-to broad-ovate, crenate or crenate-serrate, hairy on both sides, slightly scabrid above, densely covered with minute shining brown glandular scales beneath; base cuneate to rounded; apex acute. Infls corymbose; fls slightly fragrant. Peduncles 1-10 cm long, slender; bracts c. 1/2 length of corolla tube, broad-ovate, densely hairy and glandular outside, less so inside. Calyx c. 1 mm long, glandular and hairy. Corolla densely glandular and hairy outside; tube c. 1 cm long, narrow-cylindric; limb 7-12 mm diam., pink to mauve; lobes slightly recurved. Fr. not seen.
Has been grown as a bedding plant in Nairobi.. Is slender with decumbent or trailing branches.. Flowers white to lilac, in heads with peduncles usually much exceeding the leaves.. Corolla-limb is ± 6.5 mm. wide.

Environment

Occurs in mixed Eucalyptus woodland, in remnant bushland on sandstone headland, on rocky shores, along river banks with Callistemon viminalis, Casuarina cunninghamiana and Verbena tenuisecta, on damp creek banks and near settlement and mine sites.
