Characteristics

Undershrub, shrub or small tree up to 8 m high; branchlets with ± conspicuous lenticels. Leaf blade 7.5-17.2 x 2.5-7 cm, ovate to oblong, oblique and cordate at the base, muticous or mucronulate, entire to serrulate and often undulate when dry at the margin, pinnately nerved, glabrous above, glabrous or with hairs on the nerves beneath, sometimes puberulous in the axils of secondary nerves, petiole 3-8 mm long, glabrescent. Stipules united on the lower side of the branchlets, free on the upper side, 6-10(-13) mm long, glabrous or pubescent. Flowers 14-60 in partial, compound dichasia, the extremities tending to umbels, glabrous to densely pubescent; peduncle 1.6-4(-6.5) cm long, glabrous or pubescent; bracts 3-6 mm long, subglabrous to velutinous, caducous or persistent at anthesis; secondary branches 3-17(-27) mm long; pedicel of the primary flower up to 2 cm long, the others 6-12 mm long, glabrous to densely pubescent. Buds glabrous to velutinous, sometimes with a tuft of hairs at the apex. Sepals 2-3.5 x 1.5-2 mm, triangular to deltate, glabrous, puberulous or tomentulose, sometimes with longer hairs at the apex, spreading to reflexed at anthesis. Petals 1.7-3 x 0.5-1 mm, flat or slightly incurved at the margin in dried material, caducous. Stamens 1.5-2.2 mm long, erect at anthesis, caducous; anther 0.6-1 mm long, oblong. Disc 2-3 mm diam. Ovary glabrous, very rarely puberulous; style 1-2 mm long, divided from apex to 1/3-2/3 of length into 3 branches, erect to recurved at anthesis. Fruit 9-15 mm diam. Seeds 6-9 x 6-7 mm, brown.
