Characteristics

Rigid, densely branched shrublet, up to 0.5 m tall, branches erect to suberect, 15-50 mm long, glabrous and glaucous, densely leafy when young but dying after flowering and then leafless and rigid, developing grey, fissured bark. Leaves alternate, suberect, closely imbricate on flowering shoots, shortly petiolate, blade oblanceolate, mostly 4-7 x 0.75-1.5 mm but lowest leaves often shorter, acute, shallowly concave, leathery, glabrous, glaucous, midrib weakly raised abaxially, petiole 0.2-0.5 mm long. Inflorescence terminal on branches on very short peduncle, almost nested among leaves, capitate, involucrate, ±5-to 7-flowered, branches becoming stiff with age, peduncle up to 5 mm long, reddish, appressed-sericeous; lower 1 or 2 bracts leaf-like, upper 6 or 7 forming an involucre, narrowly elliptic, 5-10 x 1.5-2.5 mm, acute, glabrous adaxially, densely appressed-pubescent abaxially, reddish, becoming dry and papery, faintly nervate, caducous. Flowers yellowish, drying darker; pedicel ±1 mm long, pubescent with shaggy hairs, up to 1 mm long; hypanthium ±6 mm long, basal portion densely sericeous with long, ascending, silvery hairs 2-4 mm long, upper portion densely appressed-pubescent becoming villous with crisped hairs, 0.2-0.5 mm long distally; sepals 5, ovate, ±2 × 1 mm, waxy, glabrous adaxially and, villous abaxially. Petaloid scales 0. Stamens 4 + 4, subsessile; outer whorl inserted 0.5 mm below hypanthium mouth, half-exserted; inner whorl inserted ±1 mm below throat, fully included; anthers ±0.75 mm long at anthesis. Ovary obovoid, sparsely sericeous with an apical brush of stiff hairs; style inserted laterally, included and reaching less than halfway up hypanthium, ±2.5 mm long, stigma penicillate. Fruit not seen.
