Characteristics

Leaves 2-foliolate; leaflets 15–80 × 3–20 mm, linear to oblanceolate, subacute to rounded and shortly acuminate or mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous, usually with 2–3 longitudinal veins from the base on each side of the midrib, prominent on both surfaces; petiole 13–30 mm long, narrowly winged, produced beyond the leaflets into a branched prehensile tendril; petiolules up to 0.5 mm long; stipules 10–20 mm long and up to 2 mm wide, semi-sagittate, the lobes diverging at a very wide angle, entire; rarely a small tooth present between the lobes.

Corolla 10–15 mm long; standard red, 10–15 × 8–12 mm, the lamina suborbicular, truncate-retuse, abruptly narrowed to a broad claw c. 4 mm long; wings blue, 8–12 mm long, the lamina twice as long as the claw, oblong-obovate, obtuse, with a very long conjunctival flap above the acute auricle; keel usually c. 2 mm shorter than the wings, the lamina arcuately ascending, deltoid-subquadrate, as long as the claw, with a short obtuse auricle.
Annual; stem winged, often branched from the base, to 1 m; stipules lanceolate, with a short basal lobe; lfls lance-linear, 2–5 cm; peduncles 3–10 cm, with 1–3 violet to pink or white fls 1–1.5 cm; cal-lobes ovate or lance-ovate, subequal, 2.5–3.5 mm, acuminate, about equaling the tube; fr 2–5 cm, papillose-hirsute, 5–10-seeded; 2n=14. Native of Europe, intr. in se. Va. and at scattered stations in s. U.S.
Flowers 1–3(4) in axillary racemes; peduncle 50–80(200) mm long, usually longer than the subtending leaf, slender; bracts up to 1.7 mm long, subulate; pedicels 4–6 mm long, glabrous or sparsely glandular-pubescent.
Pod 25–50 × 6–8 mm, linear-oblong, abruptly narrowed at both ends, laterally compressed, brown or yellowish with tubercle-based long silky hairs and small sessile glands.
Calyx 6–8 mm long, glabrous; tube c. 2 mm long, lobes 3.5–4 mm long, subequal, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate.
Climbing annual herb sparsely pubescent on the young vegetative parts.
Seeds 3–10, globular or subglobose, tuberculate, brownish or blackish.
Stem up to c. 80 cm long, winged, glabrous; wings 0.5–2.5 mm wide.
Vexillary stamen free; filament sheath c. 3.5 mm long.
