Characteristics

Involucres c. 7 x 1.5 mm., narrowly cylindric, accrescent, becoming c. 10 mm. long and spreading; phyllaries green to purplish, glabrous, each often subapically corniculate, eventually swollen and corky towards the base; inner phyllaries 5, subequal, 7–10 mm. long, lorate-lanceolate, 4–5 times longer than the outer.

Leaves appearing after the flowers, 2–5 radical ± prostrate, up to c. 13 x 8 cm., elliptic-obovate to rotund, apices obtuse to rounded, margins entire or acicular-denticulate, bases ± broadly cuneate, lamina thinly succulent, glabrous and ± glaucous beneath.
Achenes light-or reddish-brown, c. 4.5 mm. long, narrowly subfusiform, finely ribbed, glabrous or minutely hispidulous; pappus many-seriate, composed of white barbellate setae 4–6 mm. long.
Flower stalks green or purple-tinged, usually solitary, wiry, branched above with divaricate-ascending slender branches, or flower stalks shorter and more densely branched.
Florets 3–4(6) per capitulum; corollas yellow becoming reddish-purple, up to 10.5 mm. long, ligules c. 5 mm. long, glabrous.
A scapose, glabrous somewhat glaucous perennial herb up to c. 60 cm. tall, from a semi-woody rootstock.
Capitula numerous, subsessile or shortly stalked, singly or in groups of 2–4 along the branches.
