Characteristics

Acaulescent perennial herb; rootstock vertical, woody.. Leaves in a rosette, obovate to spatulate, 2–9 cm long, 0.5–2 cm wide, base sheathing, margins entire to denticulate, apex acute.. Inflorescence a domed tuft of branched flowering shoots to 10 cm high; involucre 13–16 mm long, phyllaries 2–16 mm long.. Corolla yellow, often tinged purple, tube 9–10 mm long, ligule 7.5–9.2 mm long, 1.6–2.5 mm wide.. Achenes whitish, 5–6 mm long, ribbed, the marginal often compressed and slightly curved; pappus of ± deciduous setae 8–9 mm long.

Phyllaries 4–6-seriate, imbricate, glabrous except for the ± lanate-ciliate apices of the inner phyllaries, margins relatively narrowly hyaline; the outer phyllaries up to c. 3 mm. long, ovate to lanceolate, not ciliate on the margins; the middle phyllaries up to half the involucre in length; the innermost 7–9 phyllaries subequal and in 2–3 series.
Achenes up to c. 5 mm. long, subcylindric, many-ribbed with ribs minutely barbellate, narrow at first later swelling, narrowly-spongy; pappus copious, several seriate of barbellate setae 8–10 mm. long.
Scapes much abbreviated, branched, glabrous, glaucescent, bracteate; bracts ± attenuate at the apex and lanate in the axils.
Immature leaves oblanceolate, recurved callose-tipped denticulate, edges and midribs red; mature leaves not known.
Corollas white pinkish or yellow, tubes pubescent outside near the throat, ligules erect.
Involucres 12–16 x 2–4 mm. in flowering capitula, deep-purple, drying olive-green.
Plants pulviniform, up to c. 6 cm. high, flowering before the leaves appear.
Similar to L. nana (Bak.) Chiov.
Florets 8–10 per capitulum.
