Characteristics

Small or medium-sized dioecious trees. Leaves pinnate; leaflets entire. Inflorescences short or long axillary racemoid thyrses. Flowers regular; sepals 3–5, concave, free or partly joined; petals absent (or 5 in West Africa); disk lobed. Stamens 8–12; filaments glabrous, folded in bud. Ovary unlobed, 3-locular; stigma subcapitate, subsessile, with 3 lobes. Fruit a slightly asymmetrically ellipsoid capsule, dehiscing by an irregular split, or indehiscent. Seed usually single by abortion of 2 ovules, enclosed in an aril.
