Species

Bryophytes > Porellales > Lejeuneaceae > Lejeunea

Characteristics

Monoicous, green, densely caespitose on bark or stones. Stem to 10 mm long, 50 µ in diameter, richly and irregularly branched. Leaves densely but loosely imbricate, orbicular, slightly concave, overlapping and crossing the stem, margine plane-somewhat reflexed. Lobule of medium size-small, keel slightly arched, apex usually with an unicellular tooth. Marginal cells 10-12 x 24 µ, inner cells about 24 x 24 µ, basal cells 26 x 24-30 x 40 µ. Walls thin, no or small trigones. Oil bodies 3-6 per cell, pale brown, very small or composed of small granulae. Amphigastria small, somewhat patent, bilobed to 1/2, lobes triangular, acute, sinus wide, obtuse-subacute. Female organ pseudolateral, one (or two) innovation. Bracts larger than the leaves and longer than the perianth, margin undulate and somewhat sinuose. Lobule short, obtuse-truncate. Bracteole large, almost as long as the perianth. Perianth pyriform, inflated, apex umbilicate, plicae lacking, surface crenulate by bulging cells. Rostrum 50 µ wide, 60-80 µ long, mouth wide with recurved margin, 80-90 µ in diameter. Spores colourless, with green centre. Sparsely papillose, 20 x 50 µ. Androecia on short lateral branches, with 2-3 small amphigastria, and corresponding number of very small leaves and apically a pair of bracts as a globose envelope around a large antheridium (about 100 µ in diameter).
