Characteristics

Erect, decumbent or prostrate perennial herb, typically branching mainly from base, 10-50(-120) cm tall; stems pale pilose, hairs spreading and/or antrorse. Leaves subsessile or petiole to 15 mm long; blade ovate, lanceolate or elliptic, 1.8-9.5 cm long, 0.8-3.6 cm wide, base cuneate or attenuate, apex acute to rounded or subattenuate, surfaces pale pilose; lateral veins 3-5 pairs. Inflorescences axillary, solitary, congested unilateral spikes or fascicles, 1-4.5 cm long, subsessile or peduncle to 6 mm long; sterile bracts held in two ± divergent rows, green, subulate and ± falcate, 5-13 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, with 3-5 prominent parallel veins; fertile bracts pale-scarious at least towards base, oblong-lanceolate, 7-13.5 mm long, 1.5-4 mm wide, apex acuminate, indumentum of long ascending or spreading hairs at least on veins and margin, often also with minute spreading hairs, venation parallel; lowermost 1-2 fertile bracts of each spike markedly enlarged and green, ovate to obovate, with palmate venation; bracteoles (linear-) lanceolate, 6.5-12.5 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide. Calyx pale-scarious, indumentum as bracts; anticous lobes free, subulate, 8.5-11.5 mm long, 1.5-2.5 mm wide, margin somewhat inrolled, apex acute to acuminate; posticous lobe oblong-lanceolate, 9-13.5 mm long, 2.5-3.5 mm wide, margin inrolled and often partially enveloping other lobes. Corolla 13.5-20 mm long, pale blue, mauve or white, with purple markings on lower lip and throat, pubescent outside mainly on lower lip, upper portion of tube sometimes with few short-stalked glands outside; tube 8-10.5 mm long; upper lip straight, 4-8 mm long; lower lip 6-10 mm long including lobes 5.5-7 mm long. Anticous (longer) stamens with filaments 4-6.5 mm long, thecae 1.5-2 mm long, parallel; posticous stamens with vestigial second theca sometimes present. Ovary with or without few appressed hairs towards apex, with a ring of short hairs at style attachment; style with spreading hairs and/or short-stalked glands in lower half; stigma with spoon-shaped lobe. Capsule 7-10 mm long, glabrous or with few appressed or antrorse hairs towards apex; seeds 2.5-3 mm long, 2-2.7 mm wide.
