Dioicous, of medium size-rather large, brown-brownish green, on bark or usually on soil. Stem to 3 cm long, 200-220 µ in diameter, usually dark brown, cortical cells about 20 x 40 µ. Leaves subopposite, plane-somewhat convex towards the dorsal face, entire or somewhat emarginate apically or sometimes undulate and with a few short teeth, apex rounded or somewhat emarginate, upper margin arched, lower margin slightly S-shaped, decurrent on the dorsal face of the stem and frequently also on the ventral. Marginal cells 24-30 x 30-45 µ, cells in the centre up to 40 x 50 µ, walls thin, trigons small-large. Scattered single or groups of hyaline, pale red or red-brown cells in the leaves. Oil bodies 5-12 per cell, composed of small, up to1 µ large drops, yellow-brownish gray, 4-8 µ in diameter or up to 5 x 10 µ. Amphigastria small-rather large, of varying shape, connate with the upper margin of one or both the adjoining leaves, with ± short, sometimes rather long acute lobes, lateral margin ± dentate, sinus obtuse-subcute, shallow. Female bracts larger than the leaves, oblong, apex emarginate-truncate, reflexed. Bracteole with apex truncate and small teeth on one of the lateral margins, the other margin connate with the adjoining bract. Perianth broadly ovate-cuneate, compressed and with mouth truncate-somewhat crenulate-dentate. Androecia apical, with up to 15 pairs of bracts, smaller than the leaves.
