Herb, dioecious, perennial, glabrous, caespitose. Cataphylls dark tan-brown, slightly glossy, extending 1–3 cm up the culm. Culms crowded, compressed or sub-terete, erect or slightly flexuose, unbranched, 15–20 cm long, 0.5–0.8 mm diam., smooth, grey-green, with 3–5 internodes; lowest internode 5–10 cm long, upper internodes shorter. Sheaths broad lanceolate, closely appressed, persistent, 0.5–1.2 cm long, acute, dark brown; apical margin hyaline and often weathering away; lamina 1–2 mm long, erect or reflexed. Inflorescence of flowers singly on the culm or on very short branches; males 3–12 flowers per culm, females 1–6 flowers per culm; spathes shorter than flowers; floral bracts 1.6–2.1 mm long, keeled or with a prominent midvein. Male flowers: tepals broad lanceolate, acute, rigid, brown; outer tepals shorter, 1.9–2.1 mm long; inner tepals concave, 2.4–2.7 mm long; anthers 1.2–1.8 mm long. Female flowers: tepals similar length to males. Seeds ellipsoid-crescent shaped, brown, striate, c. 1 mm long.
