Characteristics

Herb, hermaphrodite, perennial, with bisexual flowers, glabrous, caespitose, forming small tussocks of crowded culms. Cataphylls stramineus, 0.5–1 cm long; lamina 3–5 mm long. Culms terete, numerous, branching repeatedly very near the base but unbranched above the cataphylls, curved and ascending or straight, 3–13 cm long, 0.5–1 mm diam., finely rugose or pitted; internodes 2 or 3, the lowest internode short, 0.4–2.2 cm long, often hidden by cataphylls; upper internodes longer, 3–6 cm. Sheaths caducous, 0.3–1.2 cm long, appressed or loose, green or straw-coloured, apex truncate; lamina erect, 2–6 mm long. Inflorescence slender, 0.5–3 cm long with 8–20 well-separated flowers sessile on the culm or on short side branches; spathes 2–6 mm long; floral bracts 2, 1.4–2.2 mm long. Flowers: tepals rigid, brown hyaline; outer tepals longer, 2.3–3.2 mm long, narrow subulate, keeled; inner tepals broad lanceolate to ovate, acute, concave; anthers 1–1.8 mm long. Seeds globose, white, c. 1 mm diam., colliculate with lines of small circular raised areas.
