Herb, female or monoecious, most specimens female, when monoecious the ♂ and ♀ flowers on different culms, perennial, glabrous, caespitose, forming small tussocks of crowded culms. Cataphylls mostly numerous, persistent, erect, 0.5–1.5 cm long, green or scarious, apex truncate; lamina filiform, erect, 0.2–2 cm long. Culms mostly straight, erect, terete to partially flattened, numerous, unbranched below inflorescence, (5–) 12–30 cm long, 0.5–1 mm diam., rugose or pitted, internodes 2 or 3; the lowest internode 2–4.5 cm long; the upper internodes longer (5.5–12 cm). Sheaths caducous, 0.5–2.4 cm long, truncate; lamina erect, 2–8 mm long, occasionally longer. Inflorescence narrow, erect, 1.5–6 cm long, with up to 40 moderately crowded and very shortly pedicellate flowers distally and on short side branches; branches somewhat clustered at apex of culm; spathes 0.5–1.2 cm long; floral bracts 2, 1.4–2.6 mm long. Male flowers: tepals rigid, reddish brown, lanceolate, acute; outer tepals longer, 2.4–3.3 mm long, keeled; anthers c. 1.8 mm long. Female flowers: tepals similar or slightly longer than males. Seeds globose, white, c. 0.9 mm diam., colliculate with lines of small circular raised areas.
Moist heaths, shrubland and woodland, in various sandy substrates, such as sandy clay, peaty sand and laterite gravel.
