Characteristics

Herb, dioecious or monoecious, perennial, glabrous, caespitose. Cataphylls 0.5–1 cm long, with a slender lamina 0.8 cm long. Culms + terete, erect or ascending, slender, 5–30 cm long, 0.2–0.7 mm diam., branched or rarely simple, with 1 to 4 internodes; lowest internode 1.5–2 cm long; upper internodes 1–5 cm long. Sheaths persistent, 3–10.5 mm long; closely appressed except when subtending a branch, pale brown, truncate; lamina erect or reflexed, 0.5–3.8 mm long. Inflorescence narrow, erect, up to 14 cm long, flowers mostly singly along the branches; branches 1.5–10 cm long. Spathes sheath-like, approximately equal in length to branches, erect, scarious, c. 5 mm long; floral bracts 2, 1.4–2.5 mm long, aristate. Male flowers: outer tepals longer, 2.5–3.0 mm long, lanceolate, attenuate to cuspidate, glossy-brown-yellow, keeled; anthers c. 2 mm long. Female flowers: tepals similar length to males. Seeds ellipsoidal, smooth, c. 1 mm long, not distinctly colliculate, the surface with a fine network of low patent plates.
