Leucadendron corymbosum P.J.Bergius

Species

Angiosperms > Proteales > Proteaceae > Leucadendron

Characteristics

Shrubs 2 m tall, erect, with many short branchlets clustered at the base, developing from a single stem at ground level. Stems few in number, erect, sparsely short-crisped-pubescent, soon glabrous. Branchlets slender, short, sparsely short-pubescent, densely clothed with leaves, clustered at intervals on the stem and at the apex. Basal branchlets numerous, slender, lax, somewhat longer than those above, well clothed with leaves. Leaves on stems up to 2 cm long, 1.8 mm broad, erect, acicular, flattened on the inside, tapering evenly to a sub-acute mucro at the apex. Leaves on branchlets up to 1.5 cm long, 1 mm broad, erect, acicular, less tapered, more closely spaced. There are no involucral leaves, the clusters of inflorescences being sufficiently noticeªable. Male inflorescence 1.2 cm diam., or usually less, globose, yellow, solitary at the ends of the numerous small branchlets, giving off a foetid smell. Basal bracts 6 mm long, 1.5 mm broad, pale, lanceolate, narrowed below, silky villous and ciliate, about 51 cm number scattered at intervals along the peduncle 4 mm long. Floral bracts 1.5 mm long, 0.5 mm broad, glabrous, sparsely long-ciliate with glassy bristles 1 mm long towards the apex. Floral bud 4 mm long, somewhat arched, crisped-spreading-pubescent below, yellow and glabrous at the apex. Perianth tube 2.5 mm long, crisped-pubescent. Claw 0.8 mm long, recurved 90°, crisped-pubescent. Limb 1 mm long, glabrous, concave, hooked. Anthers 0.7 mm long, curling slightly upwards. Pollen triangular in polar view with sides 35 µ long and polar depth 21 y. Stigma abortive, 0.5 mm long, broadly clavate, cleft, acting as a pollen presenter. Style 3.5 mm long, glabrous, filiform, very narrow above. Hypogynous scales 1.3 mm long, filiform, pale. Nectar seen filling the perianth tube above the hypogynous scales. Receptacle 7 mm long, 2 mm diam. above, clavate. Female inflorescence 8 mm long, 1 cm diam. or much less, depressed globose, solitary, terminal on the main stems and on small branchlets arising in scattered groups, exceeded but not hidden by the involucral leaves, with florets arranged in five spirals of about 76 mm each somewhat concealed beneath the curling Ungulate floral bracts, giving off a foetid smell. Basal bracts varying in size, about 6 mm long, 1.5 mm broad, about 30 cm number, densely pubescent below, sparsely pubescent above, ciliate. Floral bracts 7 mm long, 3.5 mm broad, Ungulate, acute, recurved, gla-brescent and thinly ciliate above, thick fleshy and pubescent at the base. Floral bud 4 mm long, densely villous, apex glabrous. Perianth 3 mm long, silky villous, divided below. Claw 1.5 mm long, silky villous. Limb 1 mm long, short-pubescent becoming glabrous at the apex. Staminodes 0.5 mm long, occasionally absent from the anterior segment. Ovary 1.5 mm long, ovoid, densely short-pubescent. Style 3.2 mm long, glabrous, filiform. Stigma 0.7 mm broad, entire, terminal or sub-oblique. Hypogynous scales 1.5 mm long, broad, compressed, pale. Nectar seen in the perianth tube at the apex of the hypogynous scales. Receptacle 7 mm long, 1 mm diam., cylindrical. Mature female head dehiscent, up to 1.8 cm long, 1.1 cm diam., urn shaped with bracts connate, opening towards the apex. Ungulate and recurved, the outermost densely pubescent below. Fruit a nut, not persistent, up to 5 mm long, 3.5 mm broad, 1.7 mm thick, obcordate, narrowed to the base, with a small blunt apex, mottled, lateral edges somewhat ridged, sparsely short-white-pubescent on the lateral edges and towards the apex, each hair often compressed and broader towards the apex.
