Characteristics

Shrubs up to 2 m tall, erect. Branches erect, glabrous, purplish, smooth. Leaves of male plants 3-3.5 cm long, 1.5-1.7 cm broad, of female plants 4-4.8 cm long and 1.7-2 cm broad, in both sexes obovate, obtuse, mucro immersed, margins cartilagineous, rigidly coriaceous, distinctly veined, erect, narrowed to the base, ciliate above when young with a tuft of hairs at the apex. Involucral leaves of male plants similar to the stem leaves, becoming yellow with reddish tints, closely surrounding the head; of female plants larger than the stem leaves, concave, somewhat pale green, overlapping and enclosing the head. Male inflorescence 3.8 cm long including the peduncle which is 1 cm long, 2.5 cm diam., oblong, cylindric, solitary, terminal, reddened when in bud, barren at the apex, often much larger on young plants, giving off a foetid smell. Basal bracts 6 mm long, 5 mm broad, about 9 in number, triangular, brown, ciliate, glabrous, grouped at the base of the peduncle. Floral bracts 1.7 mm long, 1.7 mm broad, glabrous, obtuse. Floral bud 7.4 mm long, glabrous, slender, enlarged at the apex, surrounded below by a dense tuft of hairs. Perianth tube 1.5 mm long, glabrous. Claw 3.7 mm long, glabrous, slender, curling 360°. Limb 2 mm long, elliptic, concave, hooked, glabrous. Anthers 15 mm long, 0.7 mm broad, decumbent. Pollen triangular in polar view with sides 37 µ long, polar depth 18 µ. Stigma abortive, 1.5 mm long, broadly clavate, minutely cleft, acting as a pollen presenter. Style 4.5 mm long, glabrous, filiform, thickened at the base. Hypogynous scales 1 mm long, stout, pale. Nectar seen at the throat of the perianth tube. Receptacle 2.1 cm long, 9 mm diam., cylindrical. Female inflorescence 2.6 cm long, 1.6 cm diam., ovoid, solitary, terminal, giving off a foetid smell, with the florets arranged in ascending spirals of 8 and 13. Basal bracts 8 mm long, 7 mm broad, ovate, obtuse, finely ciliate, glabrous, brown. Floral bracts 4 mm long, 5.8 mm broad, broadly oval, densely short-pubescent, finely ciliate, rather thick adjacent bracts lie in three spirals. Floral bud 5.2 mm long, transversely compressed, glabrous, segments divided below. Perianth segments imbricated forming a tube 4 mm long, glabrous except for one or two hairs on the lateral segments. Claw 0.7 mm long, glabrous, recurved 90°. Limb 1 mm long, glabrous. Staminode 0.5 mm long, anterior often absent. Ovary 1.4 mm long, 0.8 mm broad, oblong, bilobed above, glabrous. Style 3.5 mm long, thickened above, glabrous. Stigma 0.6 mm broad, terminal or sub-oblique. Hypogynous scales 1 mm long, stout, pale. Nectar seen in the perianth tube. Receptacle 2.1 cm long, 8 mm diam., clavate. Mature female head a cone, indehiscent, 4.3 cm long, 2.4 cm diam., ellipsoidal, with narrow bracts pubescent above. Fruit a samara, 7 mm long, 6 mm broad, winged, emarginate, dusky, pitted, somewhat trigonal with a ridge up the middle of the adaxial surface.
