Characteristics

Shrub, sprawling or erect, lignotuberous, 0.5-1.5 m high, dioecious. Leaves oblanceolate or linear-oblanceolate, 25-63 x 15-64 mm in male plants, 27-81 x 3-17 mm in female ones, hairless, shiny, base twisted, apex with fine red point; involucral leaves crowded, broader, ivory-white to pale green. Male flowers in terminal, globose capitula, 18 x 20 mm. Involucral bracts lanceolate, brown hairless, margins hairy, recurved. Female flowers in terminal, ovoid capitula, 16-20 x 13-15 mm. Mature capitulum a globose cone, up to 36 x 26 mm, hairless, red when exposed swollen in middle. Flowering time Aug.-Oct. Fruit retained.
