Characteristics

Shrubs up to 2 m tall, erect, developing from a single stem below. Branches 30 cm or more in length, 5.5 mm diam. terete, straight, erect, glabrous, slightly purplish. Leaves of male plant 5.7 cm long, 1.3 cm broad, of female plant 6.7 cm long, 1.8 cm broad, in both sexes oblanceolate, with a small sub-acute reddish mucro at the apex, glabrous, not shining, semi-erect, veined. Involucral leaves of male plant 8.7 cm long, 1.8 cm broad, of female plant 8.7 cm long, 2.1 cm broad, in both sexes semi-erect, not deflexed, coloured. Male inflorescence 2.5 cm diam., globose, giving off a strong but Pleasant smell. Basal bracts 1.6 cm long, 9 mm broad, about 224 cm number, glabrous, oily, sides ciliate, apex reddened and recurved. Floral, bract 1.5 cm long, 2.5 mm broad, linear, obtuse, glabrous, one or two hairs at the sides. Floral bud 1.5 cm long, arched, linear, tapering to the apex and yellow, glabrous, surrounded below by a small tuft of hairs. Perianth tube 1 cm long, glabrous. Claw 2 mm long, recurved 90°, glabrous. Limb 6 mm long, linear, glabrous. Anther 5 mm long, linear, presenting the pollen. Pollen triangular in polar view with convex sides 33 µdiam., polar depth 27 µ. Stigma abortive, 1 mm long, 0.5 mm broad, cleft, not exceeding the perianth tube. Style 9 mm long, densely pubescent below, glabrous and narrower above. Hypogynous scales 5 mm long, filiform. Nectar seen near the apices of the scales. Receptacle 1.5 cm long, 1.5 cm diam., conical. Female inflorescence 1.5 cm diam., globose, giving off a pleasant smell. Basal bracts 1.7 mm long, 8 mm broad, about 165 cm number, linear, obtuse, recurved, oily, sparsely ciliate below, otherwise glabrous. Floral bract 1 cm long, 1.2 cm broad, triangular, not oily, glabrous above, sparsely ciliate and densely pubescent below. Floral bud 1.3 cm long, apex glabrous. Perianth tube 1.3 cm long, transversely compressed, densely pubescent, less so on the adaxial surface. Claw 1 mm long, recurved 120°, pubescent. Limb 2.5 mm long, glabrous. Staminode 1 mm long, linear, filament partially free. Ovary 1 mm diam., globose, glabrous, surounded below by a tuft of long hairs. Style 1.4 cm long, filiform, glabrous. Stigma 1 mm broad, oblique, minutely cleft. Hypogynous scales 5 mm long, filiform. Nectar not seen. Mature female head dehiscent, 3.7-4.7 cm long, 2.8 cm diam., globose or ellipsoid, with bracts very broad, obtuse, glabrous above, densely pubescent below. Fruit a nut, 8.5 mm long, 9.5 mm broad, 5 mm thick, biconvex, perimeter bluntly ridged, glabrous except for the pubescence surrounding the basal scar.
