Evergreen shrub or small tree, 3-6 m high; shoots minutely downy. Leaves thick, leathery, dark green (almost black), glossy, ovate to oblong, up to 100 mm long, base rounded, apex acuminate to acute, sometimes green and yellow variegated. Inflorescences large terminal panicles, loosely arranged, heavily scented. Flowers white, 3-5 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Feb. Fruit shiny, black berries, up to 10 mm long.
