Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 6 m. tall.. Young branchlets silky-pubescent, finally glabrescent and densely lenticelled.. Leaves ± deciduous, obovate or elliptic-oblong, apex shortly and rather abruptly acuminate, base cuneate to rounded, membranaceous to thin chartaceous, finely and regularly serrate to serrulate, silky to subpatently hairy on both sides especially on the midrib when young, glabrescent except the midrib above, and midrib and nerves beneath with age, (4–)6–9(–16) cm. long, (1.5–)2.5–6 cm. broad; lateral nerves 8–9 pairs, raised beneath only, reticulation rather obscure; petioles 1–1.3 cm. long; stipules lanceolate, ± 5 mm. long, 1–2 mm. broad, caducous.. Flowers solitary (or rarely in twos) in the upper axils.. Pedicels subdensely and ± patently hairy, ± 2 cm. long at anthesis, accrescent to 3.5 cm. in fruit, articulate in the lower 1/4–1/5.. Sepals broadly elliptic, edge membranous, silky-pubescent dorsally, (8–)10–12 mm. long, 5–6 mm. broad.. Petals 6–8, oblong-obovate, clawed, 2–2.3 cm. long, (6–)8(–13) mm. broad.. Filaments 3–5 mm. long; anthers glabrous, 2.5 mm.. Ovary muriculate, glabrous; style 6–8 mm. long.. Capsule not known in fully mature state; spines of immature fruits inflated at the base, glabrous, 5–6 mm. long.
