Clustering palm to 5 m tall; stems to 2.5 cm diam. Leaves 6–14, to 90 cm long, most commonly bifid, very infrequently partially segmented or paripinnate; leaf sheath green, moderately fibrous on margins; petiole 0–2 cm long. Pinnae 2–12 each side of rachis, single or united, rigid, to 30 cm long, 5–900 mm wide, dull or semi-glossy green adaxially, lighter green abaxially; veins raised on both surfaces. Inflorescence to 80 cm long; peduncle to 40 cm long; rachis to 40 cm long. Staminate flowers symmetric, broadly bullet-shaped in bud, to 4 mm long, green; stamens 4–7, with connective not extending beyond anther. Fruit elongate to cylindric, 10–15 mm long, 5–6 mm wide, yellow or red.
