Characteristics

Clustering palm to 3 m tall; stems to 2.5 cm diam. Leaves 5–9, to 70 cm long, irregularly or regularly paripinnate; leaf sheath green, moderately fibrous on margins; petiole 1–23 cm long. Pinnae 2–12 each side of rachis, single or united, lax, to 37 cm long, 1–8 mm wide, light green to mid green adaxially, lighter green abaxially; veins raised on both surfaces. Inflorescence to 90 cm long; peduncle to 40 cm long; rachis to 40 cm long. Staminate flowers symmetric, globose to broadly bullet-shaped, to 2–5 mm long, cream to dull yellow; stamens 8–12, with connective not extending beyond anther. Fruit globose to turbinate, 5–9 mm long, 5–8 mm wide, yelloworange, or pink to red.

A clumping palm up to 2 m high. The stem are very slender. The leaves are compound and alternate. They are 40-60 cm long. There are 4-12 leaflets and these are 10-25 cm long. The leaflets are in pairs and well spaced and irregular shaped. The fruit is 7-8 mm long by 5-8 mm wide. The fruit are pink to red when ripe. They occur on spikes which are 30-40 cm long. These hang as long strings from the axils of the leaves. There is one seed inside. The flesh of the fruit is edible.

Environment

Tropical. It grows naturally in rainforest in NE Queensland in Australia. It grows in the understorey. It needs a protected shady position. In north Queensland it grows between sea level and 1600 m altitude.
