Characteristics

Solitary palm to 2–6 m tall; stem to 5 cm diam. Leaves 5–10, to 130 cm long, irregularly or regularly pinnate; leaf sheath green, moderately fibrous on margins; petiole 24–80 cm long. Pinnae 5–15 each side of rachis, single or united, lax, to 30 cm long, 5–200 mm wide, glossy mid to dark green adaxially, lighter green abaxially; veins raised on both surfaces. Inflorescence to 100 cm long; peduncle to 60 cm long; rachis to 50 cm long. Staminate flowers asymmetric, angled to pyramidal in bud, to 13 mm long; perianth green; stamens 8–12, with connective extending beyond anther. Fruit globose to ovoid to elongate to cylindric, 12–15 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, red.

A small solitary palm. Plants have a very slender trunk. It is 3-4 m high and 3-4 cm thick. The leaves are dark green and form a loose crown. They are 1 m long. They start by pointing upwards but then hang over. The leaflets are irregular shape and irregularly placed along the stalk. The fruit occur in long strings and are red or orange. The fruiting stalks are 1 m long. The fruit are oval and 1 cm long.

Environment

It grows in subtropical and temperate regions. It grows in moist sheltered areas of rainforest. Plants should be grown in the shade. They need organically rich, well-drained soil. They can withstand cold. In Adelaide Botanical Gardens hot house.
