Characteristics

Clustering palm to 3 m tall; stems to 2 cm diam. Leaves 8–12, to 60 cm long, irregularly or regularly paripinnate; leaf sheath green, moderately fibrous on margins; petiole 6–13 cm long. Pinnae 2–12 each side of rachis, single or united, rigid, to 30 cm long, 5–200 mm wide, dull to semi-glossy dark green adaxially, lighter green abaxially; veins prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescence to 60 cm long; peduncle to 30 cm long; rachis to 30 cm long. Staminate flowers globose to broadly bullet-shaped in bud, symmetric, to 3 mm long; stamens 6–9, with connective not extending beyond anther. Fruit elongate to cylindric, 10–15 mm long, 5–7 mm wide, yellow or red.

A clumping palm. There are 2 or 3 very slender stems. These are 0.5-1.5 cm thick and grow 1.5 m high. There are suckers around the base. The stems have rings. Leaves of young plants are 20-30 cm long. The leaves have 2-4 leaflets. The leaflets are often curved. The fruit are small and orange-red. They occur on long hanging spikes.

A tropical plant. It grows in NE Queensland. It grows in the rainforest. It is suited to temperate and cool subtropical regions. It north Queensland it grows between 150-1600 m altitude.
