Characteristics

Terrestrial herb with a single leaf closely adpressed to the ground, arising from a short fleshy rhizome.. Rhizome white, 1 cm. in diameter, with a few fibrous roots.. Leaf orbicular to cordate, up to 6 cm. long and 4.5 cm. wide, deep green above, purplish beneath, coriaceous, margins entire and slightly crinkled; 2 small sheaths ± 1 cm. long surround the stem below the leaf.. Inflorescence terminal, up to 15 cm. long; peduncle 1 mm. in diameter, with narrow acuminate sterile bracts 8 mm. long at intervals of 1–2 cm.; scape and bracts purplish; fertile bracts similar but shorter.. Flowers 4–8, ± 5–10 mm; apart, pinkish mauve to greenish purple.. Pedicel plus ovarv 5–7 mm. long, winged.. Dorsal sepal 6 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, oblong, acute at the apex, auricled at the base and half encircling the back of the column, margins rolled back; lateral sepals joined for most of their length at first, later splitting apart and rolling under, each 6 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, narrowing towards the base, falcate, apex rounded to acute with a small fleshy knob beneath.. Petals linear, 6 mm. long, 0.7 mm. wide, with margins rolled back making them appear much narrower, curving downwards but sometimes caught by the rolled-up lateral sepals so that they project sideways.. Lip geniculate with a narrow callus, abruptly widening to become circular with a fleshy disc, crenulate margins, and a slightly indented apiculum; basal part of lip 1.5 mm. long including the auricles, 1.5 mm. wide; circular part, 3.5 mm. diameter.. Column pale green, 4 mm. long including the fleshy thickened foot, geniculate, with short wings at the apex.. Fig. 63/1, 2, p. 294.

Dorsal sepal erect, 6–10 × 1–1.5 mm, linear, fleshy; lateral sepals 6–7 × 3–4 mm, obovate, falcate, joined at first but later separating, projecting forwards, the tips curled down, lying below the lip.
Leaf 1, appressed to the ground, up to 6 × 5 cm, ovate or ± orbicular, cordate at the base with 8–9 deeply impressed veins, dark olive-green with a reddish tinge above, deep purple beneath.
Lip 8 × 4–5 mm, geniculate, constricted after a broadly auriculate base then ± heart-shaped, concave with a fleshy disk in the centre; slightly emarginate at the apex.
Inflorescence to 15 cm long, 4–8-flowered; peduncle 8–12 cm long, reddish-green with 2–3 narrow, acuminate, reddish bracts c. 5 mm long.
Petals 6–11 mm long, less than 1 mm wide, linear, fleshy, deflexed or spreading.
Bracts 4–5 mm long, narrowly triangular, acuminate, purple.
Column 4–6 mm long, geniculate, winged towards the apex.
