Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Cyperaceae > Lipocarpha

Characteristics

Annuals, without a rhizome. Culms 5-40 cm tall, ca. 0.7 mm thick, flat, longitudinally sulcate, puberulent. Leaves basal; sheath tubular, 1.5-2.5 cm, membranous, glabrous, basal ones without a blade, apical ones with a blade; leaf blade linear, 1/4-1/2 as long as culm, 0.7-1.5 mm wide, papery, both surfaces glabrous, midvein obsolete, margin involute. Involucral bracts 2 or 3, leaflike, slightly broad at base, not sheathing. Spikes 2-or 3(or 4)-fascicled, ovoid, 3-5 × ca. 3 mm, with numerous bractlets and spikelets; bractlets oblanceolate to spatulate, ca. 2 mm, membranous, apex abruptly contracted and formed into recurved mucro. Spikelets with 2 glumes and 1 bisexual flower; basal glume white, elliptic, ca. 1 mm, hyaline, 5-veined, apex obtuse; apical glume oblong, ca. 1 mm, membranous, several veined, with a bisexual flower, apex acute. Stamens 2; anthers linear-oblong, ca. 0.3 mm. Style slender, exserted from subtending glume; stigmas 3, pubescent. Nutlet straw-colored, narrowly oblong, 0.9-1 mm, slightly curved, 3-sided, densely puncticulate, shiny, apex mucronate. Fl. and fr. Jun-Oct. 2n = 46.
More
Annual. Stems tufted, erect, very slender, often filiform, obtusely trigonous, striate-sulcate, smooth, 5-30(-40) cm by ½-1 mm. Leaves usually much shorter than the stems, weak, flat or involute, gradually acuminate, acute, smooth, or minutely scaberulous at the very top, 1-2 mm wide. Inflorescence ½-1 cm across. Involucral bracts 2-3, much overtopping the inflorescence, finally horizontally spreading to reflexed, dilated at the base, the longest up to 10 cm. Spikelets (1-)3(-4), globose-ovoid to oblong-ovoid, terete, squarrose, obtuse, greenish, 3-5 (finally to 8) by 2-3 mm. Glumes thinly membranous, oblong-obovate, concave, with strong mid-nerve and nerveless sides, often purplish lineolate, without the mucro 1-1½ by 2/5-⅔ mm; mucro finally recurved, smooth, ½-¾ mm. Hypogynous scales linear, 3-5-nerved, slightly longer than the nut, 1-1¼ mm long. Stamens 1(-2); anthers oblong, ¼-2/5 mm long. Style 2(-3)-fid. Nut oblong-linear, slightly curved, minutely apiculate, stramineous to fuscous, 0.9-1 by 1/5-¼ mm.
Culms 7–35 cm × 0.5–0.8 mm. Leaves longest involucral leaf spreading to reflexed, 3–10 cm × 1.5–1.7 mm. Inflorescences: spikes (1–)2–4(–5), ovoid, 2–8 × 2–4 mm; bracts 2–3, 1–13 cm × 1–2 mm. Spikelets: floral scales 2–3; 1st scale obtrullate, 1–1.8 × 0.2–0.3 mm, apex acuminate, outward curving 0.2–0.3 mm; 2d scale sometimes absent, oblong, 0.6–1.1 × 0.2 mm; 3d scale sometimes absent, oblong, 0.6–1 × 0.2 mm; stamens 1–2; anthers 0.25 mm; stigmas 2. Achenes narrowly ellipsoid to obovoid, terete, 0.7–1 × 0.15–0.20 mm, 3.5–5 times long as wide.
