Characteristics

Trunk to 30 m tall, 24–35 cm diam., grey, smooth or obscurely annular. Leaves 50–65 in a globose to hemispherical crown, rigid, arcuate to drooping; petiole 120–300 cm long, with scattered short thorns on proximal margins; leaf blade nearly circular, 155–165 cm long, coriaceous, green, abaxially glabrous, divided for slightly more than 1/2 its length; segments 60–78, apically pendulous, deeply bifurcate, with attenuate lobes. Inflorescences moderately sexually dimorphic; male 120–180 cm long, branched to 4 orders; female 160–250 cm long, branched to 5 orders; bracts and rachillae glabrous. Flowers solitary or in sympodial clusters of 2–4, funnel-shaped, white to cream; sepals triangular, c. 1.5 mm long, acute, membranous; petals narrowly ovate, c. 2.0 mm long, acute; stamens c. 1.0 mm long. Fruit globose, 9–12 mm long, shiny black. Seed globose to subglobose, c. 9 mm diam.
