Characteristics

Trunk to 13 m tall, 20–25 cm diam., grey or brown, smooth. Leaves 25–35 in an open rounded crown; petiole 150–250 cm long, 12–15 mm wide, with basal marginal thorns; leaf blade circular, 90–100 cm long, coriaceous, greyish green to glaucous adaxially, with coppery brown floccose tomentum abaxially, divided for c. 1/2 its length; segments 60–66, rigid, shallowly bifurcate, with acute to acuminate lobes. Inflorescence 100–230 cm long, branched to 4 orders; bracts with orange-brown scales; rachillae densely papillose. Flowers solitary or in sympodial clusters of 2 or 3, funnel-shaped, yellow; sepals narrowly triangular, 1–1.3 mm long, acute, membranous; petals broadly ovate, 1.6–2 mm long, acute, thick; stamens c. 1.6 mm long. Fruit globose, 12–16 mm diam., black, pruinose. Seed globose, 10–13 mm long.
