Characteristics

Corolla 17–23 mm. long, deep blue or violet with two whitish longitudinal crests in the mouth of the tube, split to the base on the back, sparsely strigose outside on the tube and along main veins of the lobes, short pubescent inside near mouth of the tube; lower lobes obovate–oblong, 9–14 mm. long; upper lobes lanceolate, recurved, 4–5 mm. long.

Leaves narrowly elliptic to lanceolate or narrowly ovate, up to 30(50) x 12(18) mm., acute to obtuse and mucronulate at the apex, attenuate into a petiole–like base or cuneate at the base, with spreading or ± appressed pubescence on both sides; margin coarsely dentate or crenate; venation distinct below.
Flowers in lax, (2)4–8–flowered, pedunculate racemes; pedicels 4–8(16) mm. long, strigose; bracts linear–lanceolate, up to 9 mm. long, entire, strigose; bracteoles usually at the base of the pedicel, linear, 1·5–3 mm. long, strigose.
Anther–tube 2–2·5 mm. long, all anthers densely hairy at the apex, otherwise glabrous except for some long slender hairs on the connectives outside.
Stems few to several, up to 90 cm. tall, rather coarse, ribbed, pubescent with spreading or ± appressed up to 1 mm. long hairs.
Calyx–lobes narrowly triangular, 3–6 mm. long, entire, strigose, somewhat gibbous at the base.
Seeds broadly elliptic in outline, trigonous, ± 0·8 mm. long, very finely reticulate, brown.
Filaments linear, glabrous, connate above, attached to corolla–tube at the base.
Hypanthium broadly obconical to hemispherical, ± 8–nerved, strigose.
Annual or perennial erect or ascending herb from a taproot.
Capsule ± 8–nerved, strigose, with 2 valves 2–3 mm. long.
