Characteristics

Flowers in lax terminal and axillary leafy racemes; pedicels up to 6–20 mm. long, finely papillose; upper bracts linear or lanceolate, equalling or shorter than pedicels; bracteoles 0·5–1 mm. long, linear, at the base or near the middle of the pedicel.

Leaves up to 15–40 x 10–24 mm., broadly ovate, gradually narrowing upwards, usually acute at the apex, gradually or abruptly narrowing below into a petiole–like base, serrate–dentate, sparsely pubescent on both sides; venation prominent beneath.
Corolla 4·5–6·5 mm. long, pale blue, pale mauve or white with darker markings, split to c. 1 mm. from the base on the back, glabrous or papillose inside on the bottom of the tube.
Anther–tube 0·6–1 mm. long, glabrous or with a few short hairs on the back; the two lower anthers each with a tuft of hairs and a hyaline appendage at the apex.
Calyx–lobes narrowly triangular, completely reflexed after the anthesis, 1·6–5 mm. long, c. 1 mm. wide at the base, entire, ciliate.
Stem sparsely to much branched, triangular and rather broadly winged, glabrous or sparsely pubescent with long hairs below.
Filaments linear, all glabrous or the two lower pubescent below, attached to the corolla–tube at the base.
Capsule obconical, 8–10–nerved, with 2 valves 1·5–3 mm. long, inferior part of capsule 1·5–4 mm. long.
Seeds elliptic in outline, somewhat compressed, ± 0·5 mm. long, very finely striate, brown.
Hypanthium obconical, 8–10–nerved, glabrous.
