Characteristics

Plant up to 6(–8) m. tall, erect, not suckering from the base.. Stem 4–10 cm. thick and woody at the base, terete, hollow, glabrous.. Leaves dark green, tough, very narrowly oblanceolate, up to 40 cm. long and 5.5 cm. wide, acute at the apex, narrowing below into a petiole-like base, glabrous; margin ± revolute, coarsely dentate or doubly dentate with teeth up to 5 mm. long and 10 mm. wide, venation protruding beneath, the lateral veins almost perpendicular to the midvein and weakly arcuate.. Inflorescence ± 2 m. long, branched with a terminal densely many-flowered raceme supplemented by about a dozen rather densely crowded axillary racemes on leafy peduncles; pedicels 5–8 mm. long, spreading-papillose, ebracteolate; bracts oblanceolate, ± 30 mm. long, papillose.. Hypanthium obovoid, indistinctly 10-nerved, papillose.. Calyx-lobes linear, ± 25 mm. long, entire, papillose.. Corolla 40–45 mm. long, purplish red, curved downwards, split to the base on the back, papillose on the outside and inside; two lateral petals linear, united with middle petals for more than half their length; three middle petals very narrowly elliptic, first united but soon splitting up at the apex into 3 ± 15–20 mm. long lobes.. Filaments purplish red, connate and forming a firm tube, densely papillose-pubescent except on the uppermost part, free from corolla.. Anther-tube ± 7 mm. long; all anthers weakly pilose on the back, the 2 lower ones also apically barbate.. Ovary subinferior; style shortly 2-lobed at the apex.. Capsule and seeds not known.. Fig. 1.
