Annual erect glabrous herb 15–40 cm. tall.. Stem not or sparsely branched, angular, very narrowly winged, purplish below.. Leaves inconspicuous, up to 3–5 mm. long and 1–1.5 mm. wide, sparsely denticulate; upper leaves lanceolate, acute, erect; lower leaves often ovate to rotundate, sometimes obtuse, spreading or reflexed.. Flowers in lax, up to 15-flowered, 1-sided racemes; pedicels up to 10(–16) mm. long; bracts similar to upper stem leaves; bracteoles minute, at the base of the pedicel.. Hypanthium obovoid to subglobose, ± 10-nerved, glabrous or almost so.. Calyx-lobes narrowly triangular to subulate, erect, 1–3 mm. long, with 1–2 pairs of teeth near the base.. Corolla 6–9 mm. long, blue, with 2 bumps in the mouth of the tube, split to ± 0.4 mm. from the base on the back, sparsely papillose inside on the bottom of the tube.. Filaments pubescent at the base, connate for most of their length, attached to corolla-tube at the very base only.. Anther-tube 1.2–1.8 mm. long, shortly pubescent on the back of the upper thecae; 2 lower anthers each with a tuft of hairs and a hyaline appendage at the apex.. Ovary subinferior.. Capsule ± 10-nerved, glabrous or almost so, with 2 valves ± 1 mm. long, inferior part of capsule 2–3 mm. long.. Seeds elliptic-oblong in outline, compressed, ± 0.4 mm. long, almost smooth, brown.
