Characteristics

Resprouting shrubs, 30-90 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches hairy. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate or incurved, longitudinally straight or slightly revolute, dead basal leaves non-persistent, (18-)20-25(-28) x (6-)8-9(-11) mm, lanceolate to ovate, adaxial and abaxial copiously hairy, indumentum spinous, hairs dissimilar in length (2 distinct length classes), with longer hairs more numerous than short hairs, not appearing gland-dotted below, trichomes simple or pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute; mid-vein abaxially prominent. Inflorescence consisting of cincinni restricted to one flower and appearing spicate. Bracts (12-)14-17(-19) x (5-)6-8(-10) mm, ovate. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), funnel-shaped. Sepals lanceolate, dissimilar in width, shorter than half of corolla tube, free; young apices incurved, or applanate, with brown trichomes on the adaxial side of young apex wanting, adaxially copiously hairy, abaxially copiously hairy. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior length ca. 15 mm, posterior lobes ca. 3 mm long, anterior length ca. 21 mm long, anterior lobes ca. 4 mm long, predominantly violet-blue, abaxially glabrous. Stamens dissimilar in length, exserted in adult flowers, anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate above staminal scales (<5 mm). Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, located ca. 4 mm from the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids narrowly ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent, lateral ridges prominent; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel wanting.
