Resprouting or reseeding shrub, 100-150 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, acroramous, transversely applanate, longitudinally slightly revolute, dead basal leaves not persistent, (50-)60-90(-100) x (5-)8-12(-15) mm, oblanceolate, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum spinous, hairs similar in length, trichomes simple; leaf margin entire; apex acuminate; mid-vein abaxially prominent. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis compact, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading slightly in fruiting stage. Bracts (15-)20-30(-45) x (4-)6-8(-10) mm, lanceolate. Flowers large (anterior petals longer than 30 mm), more than three per cymule, tubular. Sepals narrowly oblong, half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, two to four sepals partly fused, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface wanting. Petals similar, posterior petals ca. 44-45 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 6-7 mm long, anterior petals ca. 44-45 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 6-7 mm long, pink to red; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread. Stamens slightly dissimilar in length, included to exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments long adnate (> 5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 3 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to mere swellings, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales glabrous. Gynoecium 2-carpelled; ovary superior, 4-locular (via false septa); nectariferous disc present, longitudinally convex, transversely 4-angled; Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; smooth; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side more or less vertical; dorsal keel inconspicuous; ventral keel inconspicuous.
