Characteristics

Resprouting shrub, 60-100 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline to acroramous, transversely recurved (especially the basal leaves) to incurved, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves not persistent, (9-)10-18(-20) x (4-)5-9(-11) mm, ovate to obovate, adaxially sparsely to copiously hairy, if sparsely hairy then hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin, apex and mid-vein, abaxially sparsely to copiously hairy, if sparsely hairy then hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin, apex and mid-vein, indumentum spinous, hairs similar in length, trichomes pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute or obtuse; mid-vein abaxially unobtrusive. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis elongated, flower buds arranged in two distinct parallel rows, spreading greatly in fruiting stage. Bracts (5-)6-10(-11) x (1.5-)2.0-5.0(-6.0) mm, lanceolate to ovate. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals lanceolate, half to more than half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices mostly recurved, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface present. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 20-21 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 5-6 mm long, anterior petals ca. 22.5-23.0 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 6-7 mm long, predominantly violet-blue; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread. Stamens dissimilar in length, exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate (<5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 3 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel inconspicuous; ventral keel inconspicuous.
