Species

Angiosperms > Boraginales > Boraginaceae > Lobostemon

Characteristics

Resprouting shrub, 50-80 cm high. Branches caulous to acrocaulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate to incurved, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves not persistent, (20-)25-35(-40) x (4-)5-10(-12) mm, mostly oblanceolate or obovate, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum spinous or appressed, hairs dissimilar in length (2 distinct length classes), trichomes simple or pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute or obtuse; mid-vein abaxially prominent. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis compact, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading slightly in fruiting stage. Bracts (6-)15-18(-22) x (1.0-)1.5-4.0(-6.0) mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals narrowly oblong, half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices incurved-applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface present. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 20-21 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 5-6 mm long, anterior petals ca. 23-24 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 5-6 mm long, predominantly violet-blue to pink; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread. Stamens dissimilar in length, included in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate (<5 mm) or long adnate (>5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 2.5-3.5 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges prominent; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel inconspicuous.
