Characteristics

Resprouting shrub, 20-30 cm high. Branches acrocaulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves persistent, (15-)20-45(-50) x (2-)3-6(-7) mm, oblanceolate, adaxially glabrous to copiously hairy (becoming glabrous with age), abaxially glabrous to copiously hairy, indumentum finely spinous, hairs similar in length, trichomes pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute; mid-vein abaxially unobtrusive. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis compact, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading slightly in fruiting stage. Bracts (13-)15-20(-25) x (1-)3-4(-6) mm, narrowly oblong. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals narrowly oblong, half of corolla length, similar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices incurved to applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface wanting. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 25-26 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 5-6 mm long, anterior petals ca. 27-28 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 5-6 mm long, predominantly violet-blue to pink; abaxially hairy, hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to the mid-veins and lobes. Stamens dissimilar in length, included in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate (<5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 2.5 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Gynoecium 2-carpelled; ovary superior, 4-locular (via false septa); nectariferous disc present, longitudinally convex, transversely 4-angled; Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges prominent; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel prominent.
