Characteristics

Resprouting shrub, 50-120 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, acroramous, transversely incurved, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves not persistent, (30-)45-55(-60) x (8-)15-19(-21) mm, ovate to elliptic, adaxially sparsely hairy, hairs more or less evenly spread, abaxially sparsely hairy, hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin, apex, and mid-vein, indumentum umbonate, hairs similar in length, trichomes pustular; leaf margin entire (appears dentate due to pubescence on margin); apex acute; mid-vein somewhat abaxially prominent. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis elongated, flower buds arranged in two distinct parallel rows, spreading greatly in fruiting stage. Bracts (17-)20-24(-26) x (6-)7-10(-12) mm, lanceolate. Flowers large (anterior petals longer than 30 mm), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals narrowly oblong to lanceolate, more than half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, free, adaxially sparsely hairy, hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin, apex and mid-vein, abaxially sparsely hairy, hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin, apex and mid-vein; young apices applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface wanting. Petals similar, posterior petals ca. 13-15 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 2.5-3.0 mm long, anterior petals ca. 13-15 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 4 mm long, red; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread. Stamens slightly dissimilar in length, mostly included in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments long adnate (> 5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 6 mm above the base of the corolla tube, well-developed, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Gynoecium 2-carpelled; ovary superior, 4-locular (via false septa); nectariferous disc present, longitudinally convex, transversely 4-angled; Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side more or less vertical; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel wanting to inconspicuous.
