Species

Angiosperms > Boraginales > Boraginaceae > Lobostemon

Characteristics

Reseeding or resprouting subshrubs or shrubs, 25-60 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches hairy. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate, longitudinally slightly revolute, dead basal leaves non-persistent, (20-)25-35(-45) mm x (3-)4-7(-9) mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, adaxial and abaxial surface copiously hairy, indumentum spinous, hairs dissimilar in length (2 distinct length classes), with longer hairs more numerous than short hairs, not appearing gland-dotted below, trichomes simple or pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute; mid-vein abaxially prominent. Inflorescence consisting of cincinni restricted to two flowers and appearing spicate. Bracts (12-)15-30(-33) x (3-)4-7(-9) mm, lanceolate or ovate. Flowers small (anterior petals less than 17 mm long), two per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals ovate, similar in width, shorter than half of corolla tube, all partly fused; young apices incurved to applanate, with brown trichomes on the adaxial side of young apex wanting, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy (margins often ciliate). Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior length ca. 13 mm, posterior lobes ca. 2.5-3.0 mm long, anterior length ca. 15 mm long, anterior lobes ca. 4 mm long, predominantly deep violet-blue, abaxially glabrous. Stamens dissimilar in length, all but the short stamen exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate above staminal scales (<5 mm). Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, located ca. 3-4 mm from the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, with area between scales also hairy. Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges prominent; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel inconspicuous to prominent; ventral keel wanting.
More
Dwarf shrub, 0.3-0.6 m high. Leaves with blade narrowly oblong to ovate, 25-35 x 4-7 mm, apex acute, margins entire, hairy. Flowers terminal in a pseudo-spike, cymes 2-flowered. Calyx similar in width. Corolla irregular, 13-15 mm long, dark violet-blue. Stamens dissimilar, all exserted but short. Staminal scales inserted well below throat of corolla tube.
Shrublet, 30-60 cm. Leaves sessile, hairy (hairs both long and short), margins revolute, linear-lanceolate. Flowers in a pseudospike with 2 flowers per bract, blue, glabrous outside except for midvein and margins, staminal scales reduced to ridges without lateral lobes, style hairy.
