Species

Characteristics

Resprouting shrub, 60-100 cm high. Branches acrocaulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely incurved, longitudinally straight to slightly naviculate, dead basal leaves not persistent, (9-)20-30(-38) x (4-)5-7(-9) mm, narrowly oblong-oblong or ovate, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum spinous, hairs similar in length, trichomes pustular; leaf margin entire; apex mostly acute; mid-vein abaxially unobtrusive. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis elongated, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading greatly in fruiting stage. Bracts (4-)8-11(-15) x (3-)4-5(-6) mm, ovate. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped, lower part of corolla tube especially narrow. Sepals narrowly oblong to lanceolate, half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices incurved to applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface present. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 19-20 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 3-4 mm long, anterior petals ca. 22 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 4-5 mm long, predominantly light blue; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread (although mid-vein particularly hairy). Stamens dissimilar in length, exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate (<5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 2.5 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Gynoecium 2-carpelled; ovary superior, 4-locular (via false septa); nectariferous disc present, longitudinally convex, transversely 4-angled; Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids narrowly ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel prominent.
