Characteristics

Small shrub; stem simply and stellately pubescent when young, glabrescent below and usually with scattered ? glandular tubercles which blacken on drying.. Leaves obovate, up to 6 x 4 cm., attenuating below into a very narrowly and partially winged petiole (not more than 7 mm. long), upper two-thirds of margin ± bluntly and doubly serrate, apex obtuse, ± densely simply and stellately pubescent on both surfaces.. Pedicel, bracteoles and calyx similarly pubescent; pedicel ± 3 mm. long; bracteoles ovate, up to 6 mm. long, pinnatipartite.. Calyx-tube up to 15 mm. long; lobes oblong, ± 5 mm. long.. Petals (yellow or) bright orange, ± 24 mm. long, adnate for ± 14 mm., max. width 6 mm.. Stamens adnate and hairy for 1 mm. or less; filaments winged below, 12–17 mm. long, 3 longer and 2 shorter.. Ovary ± 7 x 3 mm., shortly and very densely hirsute; styles ± 16 mm. long; stigmas fimbriate.. Capsule erect, narrowly ovoid or obovoid, 10 x 5 mm. sub-angular, very shortly and ± densely hirsute.. Seeds 3–4 mm. long; aril 2–3 mm. long, margin and apex irregularly lobed.. Fig. 1, p. 3.
