Plant tufted. Leaves flat, with conspicuous marginal bands, 20-50 cm long, 3-12 mm wide, glabrous; apex rounded; sheath margins intact, brown or purple. Inflorescence shorter than to as long as leaves; male and female similar, branched, with alternate branches; axes glabrous or finely scaberulous; flowers separate, or 2 or 3 together. Bracts shorter to slightly longer than pedicel; inner bract regularly present. Male and female flowers similar, 2.5-4 mm long, greenish-yellow flecked with dark red or purple; pedicel 1-3 mm long. Sepals and petals similar, spreading or reflexed at anthesis.
