Characteristics

Tuft sparse. Leaves flat, 20-60 cm long, 2-5 mm wide, sericeous, sometimes only at base or when young; apex rounded; sheath margins intact, white. Male inflorescence much shorter than leaves, branched; branches whorled; scape almost concealed or exposed, to as long as rachis, not flattened; flower clusters whorled, numerous. Female inflorescence smaller than male, unbranched, almost concealed with 1 or 2 whorls of flowers. Cluster bracts inconspicuous, triangular, acute or obtuse, shorter than pedicel; bract and inner bract purplish. Flowers campanulate. Male flowers 2-3.5 mm long; pedicel 1-3 mm long. Female flowers 3-3.5 mm long, sessile. Sepals and petals similar, all purple or the petals yellowish; petals thicker than sepals.
