Monoicons (autoicous) or perhaps sometimes dioicous, medium sized, yellowish green-brown, usually on bark or decaying wood, Stem about 5 mm long, 100 µ in diameter. Cortical cells about 20 x 60 µ, thin walled, trigones lacking, cuticle striate, rhizoids brown. Leaves opposite or sub-opposite, imbricate, 0.7-1.2 mm long, triangular-ligulate, base 3-4 times as wide as the apex, shortly bilobed to about 1/10, often oblique, the sinus lunate or shallowly triangular, lobes ending in a small, often ill-defined apiculus of 1-3 short uniseriate cells; ventral lobe frequently larger, so that the apex is obliquely truncate; sometimes the ventral lobe is obtuse and obsolet. Dorsal margin broadly, and, in luxuriant forms, strongly arched, the ventral margin typically nearly straight, sometimes arched on weak and flaccid stems, longly decurrent, the decurrent bases approaching close to the midline of the stem and those of opposite leaves very close together; both margins frequently more or less strongly deflexed; more strongly so and often rolled when dry. Marginal cells 20 x 24-40 µ, cells in the centre of the leaves 30 x 39-30 x 49 µ, walls thin, trigones small-large, cuticle smooth or sometimes sparsely and finely papillose, cells prominent, margin of leaf irregularly crenulate with protruding cells. Amphigastria often patent or decurved, usually 4-lobed, the two central lobes largest and separated by a broad obtuse sinus, broadly connate on both sides with the ventral margin of adjacent leaves. Oil bodies compound, colourless, 3-10 per cell, 4 x 6-8 µ. Female bracts about half as large again as Ihe leaves, margins broadly recurved, variably dentate, apex narrow, bifid, with laciniate lobes. Bracteole connate at the base to a varying extent with one or both bracts, 1/2-3/4 the length of the bracts, oblong, the apex truncate and shortly bilobed for 1/8--1/4 its length, the margin broadly recurved and variably spinose, sometimes entire. Perianths 2-31/2 mm long, wings varying from narrow and entire to broad and Iaciniate-dentate; mouth shortly lobed, the iobes not extending more than a third length of Lhe perianth, weekly laciniate with 2 apical laciniae on each side. Spores 8 µ in diameter, pale brown. Elaters bispirate, 8 µ wide. Antheridia solitary, stalk biseriate.
