Monoicous, growing on bark or stone, in South Africa in swamps together with other bryophytes. Stem up to 3 cm long, irregularly branched, 90-115 µ in diameter, cortical cells 24-38 x 60 µ, walls thin, brown, no trigones. Leaves imbricate, lobe elliptic-ovate, not crossing the stem, concave, margin entire, apex rounded-subacute, generally incurved. Lobule rather large, inflated in the proximal portion, keel strongly arched, forming an obtuse angle to the lobe, free margin entire, apical tooth obtuse. Cells regularly hexagonal, marginal cells 10-12 x 12-18 µ, cells in the centre 16-24 x 22-30 µ, basal cells longer, walls thin, trigones small. Amphigastria ± imbricate, 3-4 times wider than the stem, suborbicular-reniform, flat, margin entire, insertion line weakly arched. Rhizoids brown. Androecia terminal in ± elongated branches or intercalarly, with 7-10 pairs, antheridia 1-2. Female inflorescence apical in ± elongated branches. Bracts in one pair, larger than the leaves, lobe usually irregularly dentate in the distal part, apex acute, lobule rather large, ± lanceolate, apex acute or sub-acute, margin sometimes reflexed. Bracteole large, suborbiculate, apex ±dentate or sometimes emarginate, margin ± reflexed. Perianth somewhat longer than the bracteole, obovate, apex truncate, 5-plicate, one low dorsal keel and two lateral and ventral winged keels, dentate-lacinulate, rostrum short.
