Characteristics

Evergreen tree up to 40 m. tall; bole slender, cylindrical; buttresses short, indistinct, rarely more than 2 m. high.. Leaves up to 24 cm. long, glabrous; leaflets usually 10–14, ± elliptic, up to 16 × 4 cm., apex shortly acuminate, base cuneate; lateral nerves in ± 20 closely spaced pairs; petiole flattened and slightly winged.. Inflorescence a robust, axillary or terminal panicle up to 30 cm. long.. Calyx 0.1 cm. long, glabrous except for a ciliate margin.. Petals 0.4–0.65 cm. long, glabrous.. Staminal tube 0.2–0.3 cm. long.. Capsule up to 6 × 1.3 cm.; valves black separating first from the base, or from the apex and base simultaneously.. Seeds (including wing) up to 5 × 1 cm.. A large tree. It grows 50 m tall. The trunk is cylinder shape and there are short blunt buttresses. The bark is smooth with irregular flaky pieces. The leaves are 24 cm long. There are 10-14 leaflets 16 cm long by 4 cm wide. The flowering shoots are 30 cm long and towards the ends of the branches. The flowers are greenish white. The fruit hang down and are purple to black. The seeds are 5 cm long by 1 cm wide.
